The Jeep Liberty CRD was produced for the 2005 and 2006 model years. The vehicle was a replica of the gasoline model which hosted the 3.7 liter v6 engine. The “CRD” model, as it was named, had a VM Motori turbocharged, fully electronic 2.8 liter inline 4-cylinder diesel engine. The engine has a common rail diesel (CRD) fuel injection system giving the vehicle its name tag.

As these vehicles were only sold for two years, they were rare and are still rare to see on the road. Almost any rare vehicle can be hard to find a good repair shop for because most repair shops see average, common vehicles and get experience on average, common vehicles. This vehicle, with the specialized diesel engine, is very tricky to work on for most shops. Many service centers will work on a CRD one time and they will never let another one in the door because they can be very difficult to work on. The engine has a few rare features such as a timing belt (for a diesel), a timing system using pins to set the engine at a certain place, a valve cover that 100% houses both camshafts, and a fan driven coolant heater.

When any major service is performed to the engine, specialty tools only made for this engine must be used. If a technician does not install the timing belt correctly and tries to start the engine, the cylinder head valves will contact the pistons and destroy the rockers. This type of issue is extremely common for inexperienced mechanics to run into for this engine.
